That is the same insight behind why knowing about a bias does not debias you: you need something to do, and a good model is something to do.

The outside view and the planning fallacy are research findings with a substantial literature. Inversion, second-order thinking and “map is not territory” are not experimental findings — they are useful heuristics with long histories in engineering, investing and philosophy, and no controlled trials showing they improve decisions.
That does not make them worthless. It does mean they should be presented as sharpened common sense rather than science, and anyone selling a list of a hundred models as evidence-based is selling you something. A small toolkit you actually deploy beats a large one you have only read.
How to Actually Use One
A model does nothing while it stays a concept. Turn it into a question you ask on purpose, at a fixed moment:
- Before committing: “What usually happens in cases like this?”

- Before saying yes: “What am I giving up by doing this?”
